Day 231

Friday.  Very bleah day.  Lunch club lunch was fun with Jeff's Nacho plate, with Zahra, Hananeh, and Matteo.  Will probably have brunch with them on Sunday.  Must do taxes, and reply to Jon B. and Reina, but I choose to read astro-ph instead.

Saturday.  I think I'm going to schedule 8 hours of work per day, 6 days a week.  (Then I should plan 8 hours of leisure 1 day a week.)  "Work" includes: running, eating, bathing, laundry, grocery; and of course study and work.  Leave a few hours at the end of the day to do whatever I want.

No evidence for intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters: strong constraints from the JVLA
Strader, Chomiuk, Maccarone, Miller-Jones, Seth, Heinke, Sivakoff

No radio sources observed in Galactic globular clusters M15, M19 and M22---no evidence of accretion.  Any accretion must be extremely inefficient, and/or IMBH with M>1000Msun rare.

1203.6368
Bispectrum of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect
Bhattacharya, Nagai, Shaw, Crawford, Holder

SZ bispectrum a sensitive probe of the amplitude of the matter power spectrum parameter (sigma_8^11-12, instead of ^7-9 for the power spectrum).  Bispectrum sourced by massive clusters at z~0.4, which have been well-studied observationally (power spectrum from low-mass and high-z group and clusters--less well understood).  Bispectrum at l~3000 less sensitive to astrophysical uncertainties.  Low contamination from extra-galactic foregrounds should allow SZ bispectrum amplitude with high significance.

Visual photometry: color and brightness spacing of comparison stars
Whiting

Visual photometry: dispersion 0.2 and 0.3 mag; has no apparent dependence on the color of comparison stars on their spacing in brightness.

1203.6407
Quantifying the coherent outflows of galaxies around voids in the SDSS DR7
Patiri, Betancort-Rijo, Prada

Find: vector that joins void centers with galaxies that lie in shells around them is more likely to be perpendicular to the line-of-sight than parallel to it.  Outflow in the vicinity of voids.  RSD exist for a wide range of void radius and shell thickness, but are more evident in the largest voids.  Shell thickness: 2 Mpc/h, voids larger than 15 Mpc/h.  Constrain Omega_m and Sigma_8.

1203.6410
Very small-scale clustering of quasars from a complete quasar lens survey
Kayo, Oguri

Small scale: 10 kpc/h < r_p < 200 kpc/h separation. 2pt correlation function from 26 spectro-confirmed binary quasars at 0.6<z<2.2 from SDSS Quasar Lens Search (SQLS); nearly complete for the specified range of angular separations and redshifts.  Power law where xi(r) propto r^-1.92.  Interpret in the framework of HOD.  Simple model: constant fraction of quasars that appear as satellites in DM haloes; find measured small-scale clustering signals constrain the satellite fraction to f_sat=0.054 for a SIS number density profile of satellites.  HOD modeling appears to under predict clustering signals at the smallest separations of r_p~10 kpc/h, unless very steep number density profiles assumed--suggestive of enhanced quasar activities by direct interactions.

1203.6414
Distribution of dust around galaxies: an analytic model
Masaki, Yoshida

Dust distribution around galaxy assumed to be modeled by a simple power law, similarly to the mass distribution, but with a shape cutoff at alpha * R_vir; compare with Menard+(2010) results, measured through dust reddening.  Find: alpha >1 for the characteristic SDSS galaxy halo mass 2e12 Msun/h; suggests dust is distributed to over a few hundred kpc from the galaxies.

1203.6497
Daemons: Detection at Pulkovo, Gran Sasso, and Soudan
Drobyshevski, Drobyshevski, Ponyaev, Guseva

* I don't know what a Daemon is.  I think it's some kind of DM particle, and they report detection here.

1203.6499
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey: analysis of potential systematics
Ross, Percival, Sanchez, Samushia, Ho, Kazin, Manera, Reid, White, ... Strauss, Bailey, Bolton, Eisenstein, et al

SDSS DR9: 400k galaxy spectra over 3,275 deg sq; identify, characterize, and mitigate the impact of sources of systematic uncertainty on large-scale clustering measurements, both for angular moments of the redshift-space correlation function and the spherically averaged power spectrum P(k) in order to ensure that robust cosmological constraints will be obtained from these data.  A correlation between the projected density of stars and the higher redshift galaxy sample (CMASS) due to imaging systematics imparts systematic error that is larger than the statistical error of the clustering measurements at scales s>120 Mpc/h or k<0.01 Mpc/h; ameliorated by weighting galaxies based on their surface brightness and the local stellar density.  Clustering of CMASS in norther and souther galactic footprints of the survey generally agrees to within 2 sigma.  No systematic error from applying radial selection function through random selection.  Find peak in xi_0 at s~200 Mpc/h, with a corresponding feature with period 0.03 Mpc/h in P(k); find features at least as strong in 2.5% of the mock galaxy catalogs, concluding this is probably cosmic variance.  Method and data used to locate BAO feature, construing cosmological models using the full shape of xi_0, and measure the rate of structure growth.

1203.6535
Energy deposition profiles and entropy in galaxy clusters
Chaudhuri, Nath, Majumdar

* Entropy: a thermodynamic property that can be used to determine the energy not available for work in a thermodynamic process.  Such energy conversions have a theoretical maximum efficiency; entropy accumulates in the system, which then dissipates in the form of waste heat. Amount of additional information need to specify the exact physical state of a system, given its thermodynamic specification.  An expression of disorder or randomness.
