Optically selected compact stellar regions and tidal dwarf galaxies in ULIRGs

32 ULIRGs, and their compact SF regions (knots) studied. In ULIRGs knots are intrinsically more luminous than in less luminous interacting systems, due to size-of-sample effects. Not many tidal dwarf galaxies found; only a few fraction of the general dwarf satellite population could be of tidal origin.
